The antigen which is any substance foreign to the immune system and can cause an immune response is characterized by :-

  • Most of them have a large molecular weight but there are low-molecular weight substances called haptens which are capable of producing an immune response.
  •  They are composed of proteins or polysaccharides but may also be lipids, polypeptides, or nuclear acids, among others.
