Yes, were is a helping verb. It's the past form of verb To be. We use were with plural pronouns : we- they- you or any plural noun. We can use it as a helping verb or as a main verb.

ex:

They were at the airport( main verb)

They were playing the piano , when the electricity went off. ( a helping verb.)
