There are several reasons for discharging the jury:
if there is a hung jury, which means they are unable to determine whether to find the defendant is guilty or innocent.
If a mistake is made during a trial, that might compromise the defendant's right to a fair trial.
if the judge finds that the jury is not fair, is not conducting itself properly, or is not performing its duty as a juror.
if a close relative of one of the parties or one of the attorneys is on the jury.
