You need a passport to visit Ireland, but there are certain exceptions:
You just need to show your valid photo ID if you are a British citizen.
You can use your national identity card if you are a European citizen and arrive and depart from an airport in the Republic of Ireland.
However, you will require a passport if travelling directly from the EU to Northern Ireland or from Northern Ireland to the United Kingdom.
