Earphones aren't harmful at low volumes. However, playing loud music too close to your eardrums can result in permanent hearing loss. Earphones can also easily introduce bacteria when placed directly in the ear canal if not cleaned on a regular basis, which increases the risk of bacterial transfer to more sensitive parts of the ear.
