Yes, The American writer, poet, editor, and literary critic who is best known for his poetry Edgar Allan Poe was in the army as a soldier after he lied about his age, saying he was 22 although he was 18 years old to meet the minimum age of enlistment at the time and attained the rank of Sergeant Major  which is  the highest achievable rank for enlisted soldiers and he was discharged from the army in January 1831 for neglect of duty.
